Who is Mary J. Lai?

Mary is a freelancer currently hailing from the land of smog and traffic, aka Los Angeles. Born in Maryland (hence the name - she owes her creativity to non-parental influences), but raised in L.A., she found herself lost amongst the redwoods up in Santa Cruz (viva le banana slugs) in 1999 for her undergraduate career. After graduating with a B.A. in Art, she is now graduated from the UCSC Science Illustration program complete with certification. She wishes to bring dynamic qualities to the world of science illustration.

And what does the J. stand for? That is a story for another day. Some random factoids:

  • She loves to fish. Though she admits she's terrible at it. Don't let the fish know this weakness.
  • A sun conure, canary with 7 toes and 1 eyebrow, houserabbit, & chow dog contribute to the household madness.
  • Mary's quite the avid cartoonist and comic artist, hence the gestural influence on her science illustrations. If you need cartoon work done, you've come to the right place.
